The general design and visual elements are credited to A-1 Pictures, known for animating previous series in the franchise. As the project evolved, the game theater grew; specifically, the later release of Theater Days added two new characters (Konomi Baba and Megumi Tokoro), but the total cast remained 39, not 41. Three of these Million Live! characters were also featured in the anime film The Idolmaster Movie: Beyond the Brilliant Future!, further integrating them into the broader universe's narrative history.

The timeline began on February 27, 2013, with the release of an idol raising simulation game where players acted as producers training idols and expanding the 765 Production Theater. Idols were obtained via cards ranked by rarity in Vocal, Dance, Visual, and a special Ex category. The feature phone version ceased operations on February 2, 2016, replaced briefly by a desktop client before the entire GREE service shut down on March 19, 2018. On June 29, 2017, the rhythm game Theater Days arrived for Android and iOS, reusing many cards from the original while introducing 3D models and communication events. A television anime adaptation by Shirogumi premiered on October 8, 2023, following a theatrical release in three parts starting August 18, 2023. An OVA episode is scheduled for Blu-ray release on March 27, 2026.
